I hope everyone is staying safe and healthy during this uncertain and difficult time. On one hand, practicing social distancing/isolation/quarantine can be a challenge to our mental health and emotional well-being, but with all this “extra” time on our hands, it can also be an opportunity to self-reflect and even take part in some much needed self-care.
Personally, in the first few days I’ve stared out the window feeling grateful that I am fortunate to be able to work from home, and being thankful to those who are on the front lines risking their own lives for those in need, as well continuing to provide us with our daily essentials. I have also done quite a bit of early spring cleaning. I was looking through my skincare stash, and I thought I would just quickly share with you a few of my most loved “clean” skincare items. When I say “clean”, I use the Sephora definition, i.e., without Sulfates—SLS + SLES, Parabens, Formaldehydes, Formaldehyde-releasing agents, Phthalates, Mineral Oil, Retinyl Palmitate, Oxybenzone, Coal Tar, Hydroquinone, Triclosan, Triclocarban, Undisclosed synthetic fragrances.
Read on for a few of my faves.
Kora Organics Noni Glow Face Oil. My skin is on the oily side, but I have loved oils for many years to help balance my skin. Particularly when you have aging skin, it is still important to keep the skin hydrated, and I love the texture of this oil and the way my skin looks after is absorbed.
Youth to the People Superberry Hydrate + Glow Dream Mask. This is an overnight mask that I didn’t think I needed. I’m generally not a fan of masks as they tend to clog my pores, but you apply this like any other moisturizer and let sit on the skin while you sleep and you will wake up with the soft, hydrated skin. I find this better than the Laneige Water Sleeping Mask. It seems like such a small jar for what you pay for, but you really don’t need a lot to cover your face.
Little Seed Farm Cream Deodorant. I’ve used aluminum-free deodorant for many years and up until last year, I actually used to use Old Spice (yes, the men’s deodorant!). I finally decided to once again try to find a natural deodorant that actually worked for me, and I found this brand on Amazon. I’ve been using the Charcoal version, which is not the prettiest of smells, but it’s not bad either. much like menthol. And you really can’t smell it once you’ve applied it. You only need the tiniest amount (I also use their handy applicator) and I’m less than 3/4ths of the way through after six months. I can actually go a few days without reapplying even with hard, sweaty workouts mixed in.
The other scents are quite nice (the grapefruit is a bit grittier in texture from my experience), but I’ve heard that once you’ve tried the charcoal, the other scents don’t quite work as well. I personally haven’t had that issue. I definitely recommend trying this deodorant cream out if you are searching for something natural to use on your skin that is also effective. Normally, I could find this on Amazon but for now it seems like you can only purchase from their website (free shipping with orders $25+). However, if you want to try a sample of the different scents, you can still purchase it from Amazon here.
And last but not least, emu oil. Yes, it is oil that comes from an emu (the bird, so no, not vegan). But it has great moisturizing, soothing and anti-inflammatory properties. I like to use it after I’ve done a strong chemical peel or physical exfoliation and my skin needs a little extra love than my regular moisturizers. I don’t have a particular brand that I’m loyal too, but only ensure that it is 100% pure emu oil.
