one Off-the-shoulder ruffle sleeve top, five ways

I am pretty good and skipping trends when they don’t fall into the so-called “confines” of my personal style.  While I do not believe in staying away from all the trends of the moment, I do think it’s important to take a look at a trendy item and see how it fits into the rest of your wardrobe. All season I’ve tried to avoid this “fluffy sleeve” trend, but I came across this particular off the shoulder top by 1.State and thought that maybe I could make it fit into an edgy, minimalist wardrobe and still feel like myself. I haven’t done one of these five-ways posts in a long while, but here it is!

Typical outfit, with my favorite destroyed/distressed jeans:

Off the shoulder top + destroyed denimOff the shoulder top + destroyed denimAG Legging Ankle Jeans (4 year Fog) / Ann Taylor Mila Pumps (Camel) / 1.State Off the shoulder voluminous blouse (extra white) / Banana Republic Trip wrap leather bracelet / Forever21 wrap bracelet / forever21 rings / Chloe Faye Bag (black, but love it in carbon grey)

With a pair of culottes:

Some petites may not like the cropped hem paired with some ankle strap heels, but I’ve never been one to worry about the ankle strap. But in case you are, here is the outfit paired with some nude heels:

This look is a little 70’s inspired:

Off the shoulder top + wide leg jeansOff the shoulder top + wide leg jeansSam Edelman Rodney Pointy Toe Flats (Leopard) / Hudson Wide Leg Denim (very old) / Madewell Bucket Bag (newer version, love in dark cabernet) / Zara Choker (old) / Banana Republic triple wrap leather bracelet

I’ve always been obsessed with super wide-leg pants. I’m not sure what it is, but if I see a pair hanging on the rack, I’ll come running. Petites tend to shy away from a super wide-leg in fear of being shortened, but I don’t see a need to avoid them. I’m wearing them with flats, but a great way to lengthen the leg is to wear them with heels and keep the hem as long as possible.

I was trying to think of a cool way to add layers, while still making it obvious that it was actually an off-the-shoulder top. I thought it would be visually interesting to add a vest, and I’m pretty happy with the look. I’m also loving the mix of a feminine blouse with an edgy shoe.

Off the shoulder top + shortsOff the shoulder top + shortsOff the shoulder top + shortsAritzia Linen Shorts (old, similar here) / Zara lace up flats (old, similar) / Chloe Medium Faye Bag / Apple Watch with Casetify Grid Straps / Forever21 Rings / Earrings (no idea, really old)

An outfit that is a bit more care-free and easy, is to pair with shorts. I did a little mullet-tuck of the top so it actually looked like I was wearing bottoms. Because really, what’s worse than looking like you aren’t wearing any pants? =)

One Cropped Wide Leg Pant (or Culottes), Five Ways

It’s been quite a while since I did one of these “five-ways” posts.  Truth of the matter is, posts like these are much more time-consuming than the regular one-outfit posts, but I thought I would put some effort into making one since I’ve been thinking about it for some time now. Having said that, however, I’m going to cheat and use some old outfit posts for these cropped wide leg pants, or alternatively, culottes.

From last spring, an easy, work-appropriate outfit:

One Sweatshirt, Five Ways

I never thought I would give into this sweatshirt-chic trend. I’ve been known to give one of my closest friends a hard time for wearing her hooded sweatshirts wherever she goes and then lamenting that she gets mistaken for being underage even with two young children in tow (which is accompanied by dirty looks by judging eyes). Personally, the hooded sweatshirt definitely has its place, namely, at the gym, in the house, and dog-walking but not much else (I may also allow for very quick errands). I can’t see why you can’t just switch out a hoodie for an actual jacket. However, I came across this sweatshirt-style sweater on the Club Monaco website and was completely captivated by it. It didn’t have a hood (if it did, I would have given it an automatic “nay”) but the alligator motif gave it this dressed up feel that I could most certainly get used to. I also love that the hem is slightly longer in the back:

I know many of you are thinking, OK, well how do I wear this? And how versatile can it possibly be? I know you are asking this, because I was asking myself the same questions. So I came up with a few ways to style this sweatshirt, both for the office and for the weekend that didn’t include a trip to the gym (I also did a similar post for Forbes Style File a few months back, if you are interested in checking it out, see here).

Keep in simple. Winterize this look by adding some tights and/or boots:

Club Monaco Belle Sweatshirt /Zara Pencil Skirt / 3.1 Phillip Lim Pashli Satchel / LAUREN by Ralph Lauren Adena Pumps / Urban Outfitters Bracelet / Forever21 Rings

With leather (or faux leather) pants:
Alice + Olivia Zip Front Leather leggings (check out this faux front leather pair) / Aritzia Spencer Wool Coat / Aldo Chism Wedge Sneakers / 3.1 Phillip Lim Pashli Satchel / Topshop Rings / Aritzia Hat

Bejeweled:

J.Crew Factory Fringe Necklace (similar) / Sleeveless Button Down Blouse (similar here) / Club Monaco Rachel Pant / Jean-Michel Cazabat Sage Wedge Booties (similar) /  Zara Basic Suede Shopper Tote (similar) /  Michael Kors Runway Watch MK5076 (Silver) / Topshop Rings

With denim flares:

J Brand Lovestory (Dark Vintage, size 25)(also love it in this color) / Express Graduated Spike Necklace /
Urban Outfitters, Aldo Bracelets / Botkier Charlotte Clutch (Black)(cute alternative here) /  Topshop Rings / Coach Letty Wedge Boots (similar here).

This Club Monaco Belle Sweatshirt goes for $98.50, and it’s lovely, but I would certainly wait for a sale (if you have a student card/email you can get 20% off). There are tons of other great alternatives right now, as well. As an added bonus, when this trend passes, you can always where it as a cover up to the gym (which is what I plan on doing).

And of course, this post would not be complete without a recap:
