Holiday Dressing without the Dress

If you have followed my blog way before it became “Dressed Accordingly”, you know that I have always had a difficult time with dresses.  I generally find myself uncomfortable wearing them, so when the holidays come around and I find myself in the position of having to “dress up” it used to (and still can) be very stressful.

But over the years, I’ve come to realize that holiday dressing does not always have to involve wearing a dress. A great wide leg trouser, a one-piece jumpsuit, or a culotte, can be a beautiful and sophisticated alternative to a dress. If you don’t currently have any of these pieces in your closet, here are some great options I’ve come across as of late:

As for the top, I tend to find myself leaning towards halter tops, but I did come across this cool fringe top at Zara which can easily be layered over a simple black sheath dress or paired with a trouser or skirt. I purchased this myself to try out for the holiday party with my colleagues and I’m excited to see if it works in real life as well as it does in my imagination!

Also, accessories are extremely important to finish off these looks. For everyday, I’m pretty simple when it comes to accessorizing, but for the holidays, usually the blingier the better. I’m loving the oversized earcuff right now, but some more “traditional” statement earrings or necklace with a large ring, is also great to complement an outfit.

A few other items that I think are great alternatives to the dress for holiday dressing here:

And for those of you already for Black Friday deals, J.Crew is having a sale: 30% your entire purchase including stuff that’s NEVER on sale (hello, Regent blazer?!).  Their December Collection has been released today if anyone is looking for some brand new goodies. It’s also a great time to pick up some outerwear as the temperatures are really starting to drop. Plus, today (Tuesday), free shipping on any purchase. And for cardmembers, an extra 40% off sale. Use code GETSHOPPING. I picked up this blazer.

Shopbop is having a buy more, save more sale. With code GOBIG15, get 15% off your purchase of $250, 20% off your purchase of $500 or 25% off your purchase of $1000+.

Madewell is offering 25% off your entire purchase with code CALMDOWN. This bucket bag has been in constant rotation since I got it!

For those of you that also bypass the dress for the holidays, what will you be wearing to holiday events? I’d love to hear it!

A New Chapter

Some news from behind the scenes: I started a new job this week! I am still in Toronto, even though I fully expected to return to the U.S. to begin this new journey, but as it so happened, I was offered a great opportunity at home that I couldn’t turn down.  I’m experiencing all those feeling that come with starting a new chapter in one’s life including excitement and anxiety. As you may have noticed, I skipped a few blog posts since I was traveling over the last while and as I settle into my new job, I hope to get these posts going again. I don’t expect my work hours to change drastically from my last job, but it’s probably too early to be setting such expectations. I will have to be diligent with managing my time.

One of my most recent purchases for my new job was this cross-over top by Pleione that I purchased at Nordstrom. It comes in petite sizes! It runs slightly large around the torso, but in the end I went with my regular size for a slightly slouchier look and makes for a different silhouette than I’m used to when paired with a pencil skirt. It comes in an array of patterns and colors and I certainly recommend.

A Flash of Red

The easiest way for me to add color to my usually neutral outfits is to add a colored scarf. These square scarves are great for warmer months when temperatures allow for an extra something to be hanging around your neck. The red also gives a little more visual interest to a white button-down and blue denim.

I’ve been traveling a lot lately, so although I think I’ve done a pretty good job of keeping my blog posts regular, occasionally I hit a bit of a slow down. I’m hoping things will settle down soon!

Also a quick mention, Ebates has 16% cashback at Nordstrom and other great stores ending tonight! Not a member? Use my referral link! Also, Ann Taylor is offering 50% off your purchase with code SECRET50. And as if that wasn’t enough get 25% off  your purchase at J.Crew with code SUMMERLOVE or 30% off with J.Crew credit card with code CARDLOVE (exclusions apply) with free shipping Sunday only. Happy shopping!
